How a personal health crisis ignited a national movement for health education and disability empowerment
In 2016, Mr Thomas Arthur (founder) ignored persistent fatigue and headaches — assuming it was nothing serious. When he collapsed, doctors discovered advanced hypertension and early-stage kidney damage.
“I was lucky to survive. But many Ghanaians in rural areas don’t get that second chance. That fear and regret became fuel.” — Mr Thomas Arthur, Founder
I realized that health education is the most affordable medicine. And I saw physically challenged people being left behind — begging on streets when they could be tailoring, coding, creating. DELO Foundation is my apology to my younger self and my gift to Ghana.
From small health talks to a nationwide vision
After recovery, Delo starts free health awareness sessions in his local community, partnering with a single clinic in Tema.
With 5 volunteers, we launch our first major health screening event reaching 700+ people. The foundation’s motto “Disability is not inability” is coined.
20 physically challenged individuals trained in IT literacy and bead-making. 90% gain income within 6 months.
Opened first permanent skill hub in Ashanti Region. Trained over 300 PWDs in tailoring, digital marketing, and agribusiness.
Announcement of “Centers in Every Region” by 2034, aiming to train 10,000+ physically challenged Ghanaians.
Our values are rooted in empathy, action, and inclusion
Education before crisis. We believe knowledge saves lives and reduces the burden on Ghana's healthcare system.
We see ability, not disability. Our training centers are designed with accessibility and dignity at the core.
Skill training leads to income generation, breaking cycles of poverty and dependency.
Mr Thomas Arthur is a social entrepreneur, public health advocate, and a person who turned his darkest medical scare into a beacon of hope. After his recovery, he left a corporate job to dedicate his life to community health and disability inclusion. He has received the Ghana Impact Award (2023) and is a recognized Ashoka Fellow.
Invite Mr Thomas to speak“I lost my leg in an accident and felt worthless. DELO didn't just train me in mobile phone repairs — they gave me back my pride. Now I employ two other persons with disabilities. DELO is family.”
